I read Oliver James’s book Aflluenza quite a while ago, there is a great section on education, just came across his talk at the RSA from 2006.

Currently thinking about this as I’m half way through Guy Claxton’s book. He uses this quote by Einstein

Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.

Not in a negative way; after the pressure of exams have disappeared, the knowledge and skills left behind are representative of the education that the child has had. He talks about an epistemic apprenticeship, one based upon how knowledge is created and how it can be challenged. He also discusses a ‘character building curriculum’, character in terms of the qualities needed for life-long learning, curiosity, imagination, resilience …

Interesting discussions about the successful student and the successful learner, the successful student not necessarily being the most successful learner and vice versa…
